Dylan Cole, in his Production Design class mentioned that one of the hardest things for him to do was to keep the spirit of the sketch alive as he was finishing a painting.

The same thing happens with 3D concepting. Even in software as engineering-focused as Maya.

In this clip you see Gurmukh working on a students work and helping him see how he can keep the “personality” of the piece alive while establishing better production-quality topology.
